Scholarship Criteria and Applications
- African American graduating high school senior
- Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale by February 1st in the year of graduation
- United States Citizen
- Complete the scholarship application form online
- Submit a typed essay of no less than 300 words on the topic: “Why Education is Important to Me ”
- Filing Period: January 1st through March 1st Application

Dr. Julianne Malveaux Scholarship Requirements:
- African American Female
- College Sophomore or Junior enrolled in an accredited college or university
- Majors in journalism, economics or related field (public policy, creative writing, etc.)
- Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale
- United States citizen
- Complete the scholarship application online
- Submit a 1000 word essay on the topic: Your Career Plans and their Relevance to the Dr. Julianne Malveaux Program Theme: “Black Women’s Hands Can Rock the World”
Filing Period: January1st through March 1st Application
The Dr. Blanca Moore-Velez Woman of Substance Scholarship Requirements:
- African American Female – age 35+
- Undergraduate student enrolled in an accredited college or university
- Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale by February 1st
- United States Citizen
- Complete the scholarship application online
- Submit a 500 word essay – Topic: “Challenges to the Mature Student and How I Overcame Them”
- (Open to residents of the state of Maryland only)

The Houston Sun Scholarship Requirements:
- African American Female or Male
- College Sophomore or Junior enrolled in an accredited college or university
- Journalism major (print media)
- Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale
- United States Citizen
- Complete the scholarship application online
- Submit a 750 word essay – Topic: “Credo of the Black Press”
- Recipient must be a resident of the South Central District (Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Missouri, or New Mexico)
- Filing Period: January 1st through March 1st Application
The Ethel Lee Hoover Ellis Scholarship
- African American Female
- College Sophomore or Junior enrolled in an accredited college or university
- Business major
- Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale
- United States Citizen
- Complete the scholarship application online
- Submit a 750 word essay – Topic: “Business and Community United”
- Recipient must be a resident of the Southeast District (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, or West Virginia)
- Filing Period: January 1st through March 1st Application
